Forest in Croatia
Ivan Hederić

The Adria-Balkan region with more than 5 million hectares of certified forest area is a valuable source of FSC-certified input material at the national, regional and international levels. One of the significant beneficiaries of this certified natural resource is the furniture sector. Furniture manufacturing and selling companies may, by becoming part of the FSC chain of custody and obtaining certified input materials or products, help achieving FSC's vision [World forests meet the social, environmental and economic rights and needs of the present generation without compromising the rights and needs of future generations], i.e. saving the world's forests.

Although furniture production and consumption in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia is on the rise, these countries still represent relatively small national furniture markets in the European context. However, with more than 3 thousand registered furniture companies, the Adria-Balkan region is also export-oriented, mainly to the EU market. In addition to a significant source of certified materials, furniture manufacturing and selling companies from this region can also take advantage of the favourable geographical location and proximity to major markets such as Italy, Austria or Germany.

Initially, FSC certification was a requirement of our foreign customers, but today it is the minimum standard, which we ourselves demand from our suppliers.
