Forest Knowledge Boxes

Throughout 2024, thanks to a project funded by FSC strategic funds, the FSC Adria-Balkan team – in collaboration with the Croatian association Modelna šuma Istra (Istria Model Forest) – has developed a series of training modules to present scientific forestry concepts in a more accessible and engaging way.

The Forest Knowledge Boxes are designed to enrich the school curriculum for primary and secondary students in Croatia (ages 12 to 17). They help teachers create engaging, interactive lessons while allowing students to explore and understand the importance of forests, their functions, and their services through individual and group activities.

These educational toolboxes are freely available for teachers and can be accessed through printable fact sheets in PDF format below. Aside from the content overview, they cover five main topics:

  • CONTENT OVERVIEW (download file: PDF)
  • PART 1: What is a forest? (download file: PDF / .pptx - in Croatian)
  • PART 2: Diversity of forests and trees (download file: PDF / .pptx - in Croatian)
  • PART 3: The magnificent benefits of forests (download file: PDF / .pptx - in Croatian)
  • PART 4: Forest fruits and resources (download file: PDF / .pptx - in Croatian)
  • PART 5: Let’s protect our forests (download file: PDF / .pptx - in Croatian)

If you need help downloading the Tool Boxes or would like to collaborate with FSC Adria-Balkan on teaching activities, please contact us at adriabalkan@fsc.org.

Before finalizing and publishing the boxes, they were tested in two Croatian high schools with six classes participating. Read about the testing experience in Pula (Istria) HERE.

The Forest Knowledge Boxes provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of forest ecosystems through hands-on activities and research, fostering awareness of their significance and conservation for future generations.
