Introduction

Long-term FSC international member from Serbia, Mr. Zoran Tintor, held the first official EUDR meeting, in the venue of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia on April 10th, for the members of the forestry sector, wood industry, furniture industry, paper, cardboard and and cardboard packaging industry from Serbia. This important meeting was organised together with the Association for Forestry, Wood Processing, Furniture and Paper Industry PKS and Bureau Veritas Group.

During the meeting, the expected challenges of implementing the new European Union Regulation of Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) were discussed. Mr. Tintor also took this opportunity to introduce the new FSC Regulatory module - a new voluntary standard currently being developed by FSC, which will help companies get ready to comply with the new requirements.

Deforestation

EUDR in short

The EU is a major consumer of commodities associated with both deforestation and forest degradation, which are major drivers of climate change (11% of greenhouse gas emissions) and biodiversity loss. The overarching EUDR objective is to minimise the EU’s contribution to global deforestation and forest degradation. This is achieved by minimising the risk of products from supply chains associated with deforestation or forest degradation being placed on the EU market or exported from it and stimulating the demand for and trade in legal and «deforestation-free» commodities and products within the EU.

All-new EUDR Regulation is in force since 29 June 2023 and will become applicable since 30 December 2024. Find more information on EUDR here.

Next steps

After the meeting, in communication with all interested stakeholders, it was concluded that in the coming period it will be necessary to intensify information on all current and future activities of decision makers in the EU regarding the EUDR Regulation, in order to better prepare the Serbian economy for the implementation.

In the coming period, two more professional presentations on this topic are planned in cities of Valjevo and Belgrade.
