FSC at 4th International Circular Packaging Conference 2025

Representing FSC, Jure Rejec highlighted the link between EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements and FSC’s certification system, emphasizing that circularity must begin with responsibly sourced materials.

“FSC certification complements PPWR goals in several ways,” Rejec told delegates. “It prevents deforestation by ensuring responsible forest management; it offers verified traceability across the supply chain; and through the FSC Recycled label, it supports recycled fiber use. It also gives brands a credible, recognized sustainability mark that helps avoid greenwashing and reinforces consumer trust.” He explained how FSC certification and labeling provide companies with verified proof of responsible sourcing: ”FSC’s Chain of Custody system ensures that every fiber can be traced from a responsibly managed forest through every stage of the supply chain. For packaging, this means that every paperboard, label, or fiber-based component can be verified as responsibly sourced.''

FSC’s presentation highlighted several examples of good practice from global brands integrating FSC and circular design, such as Coca-Cola, DS Smith, Diamond Packaging, and others.

About the 4th International Circular Packaging Conference (CPC)
The conference, which was organized by the Institute for Pulp and Paper (ICP) in Ljubljana and the Faculty of Polymer Technology from Slovenj Gradec, brought together stakeholders from academia, industry, design studios, brand owners, and all actors involved in the packaging life cycle—from concept to end-of-life.

The main goals of the event were to share knowledge, best practices, and ideas, and to foster new connections that support the transformation from a linear to a circular packaging supply chain.
